I think the stages approach would require a lot of experimentation and thinking before we deploy it, while an alpine build could be more easily added and would have its benefits seen immediately.

The second stage is tricky: it will add a fixed amount of delay in all builds, and for only make dist and make && make check, it seems an overkill. That's because it could run at stage0 after one build (btw. we already have `make distcheck`, isn't that testing this scenario?). Said that I still think that a second stage with more advanced checks may be useful though that may be a very long discussion and even harder to implement without moving our CI outside the acceptable limit of 1h.
