For the latter approach, what do you say the new backend functions (`store`, `remove`, `retr`) take a list of attributes instead of a datum, as in `C_FindObjects` in PKCS#11? That way we could supply arbitrary hints to the backend and wouldn't need another function for the "remove all" behavior.
