My query may have been unclear in that I couldn't get openssl or its relying software to understand gpgsm secret keys.

Your instructions are similar to what I found in the documentation. Where I ran into trouble was that openssl could not read the secret key output. Perhaps it's because I was exporting in PKCS#12 and not PKCS#8 (although openssl says that it can read p12 files just fine). Consequently, software expecting openssl certificates also wouldn't read the gpgsm generated certs or keys.
