Unless I was going something wrong, I tried the version in the svn
without success.

I'm wondering whether a better solution to fat binaries would be to
generate i386 and PPC binaries separately, complete with any assembly
optimisations, and then join the binaries together.  But that's a
completely separate project in itself...
