Just that, I removed the C-style comment from the version script.

That might be a too old ld, although I can't really tell.  I have
never really researched which versions of ld support which type of
version scripts.  Having a version string is very much different from
having no version string at all (it's a completely different
functionality), but in any case, it happens that we decided to use
versioned symbols on targets that support them (currently only GNU).

So, you should be ok with CVS, which will be released as 1.0 soon.
