Thank you!  I was able to reproduce this like this:

```
./configure --build=x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu --host=i586-pc-gnu
make # works
git revert 53a91994106f9b7bbf244e8af9c5f852d478752c
make # fails with the error in this bug report
```

I'll try to add a pipeline job to catch regressions here.
