Yes I know :-) I was just wondering what if the compiler might optimize the inner loop as though it's has [O(1) amortized bound](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amortized_analysis), e.g., with special memory copy instructions.

After reading the surrounding code more closely, I like your approach more; let me approve the MR.
