What about
```
YEAR=`date -u -r ChangeLog +%Y 2>/dev/null || date --date=@`git log -1 --format=%ct` +%Y`
```
That would take the date from ChangeLog in case of building from a tarball. Building in a git directory would give us the year of the last commit. If you agree, please amend your commit and use '-s' to add a Signed-Off-By.
