Follow-up Comment #3:

There are many options to enable in a certificate when generating it. It
might be an option (PKIX extension) in the certificate of gnutls that
frustrates the clients you use. Could you post the gnutls certificate that has
issues and the openssl certificate that works? Have you tried different
combinations of options when generating the certificate?
