Can these rootkits work when there is no mbr access?

I'm booting from a dvd ubuntu install disk.
No root information is available anyway, and the mbr on the hard 
drive isn't accessed.

Now if these rootkits can copy the usb secring, 
then I might be worried.

Can they??
