I stand corrected.  It seems gnome-screensaver has a different behavior
if the process has been restarted.  Apparently the gnome-screensaver
doesn't work the same as the login screen (ie I assume it doesn't
implement PAM correctly?).

Under Gnome/GDM it works better to select "Switch User" from the
gnome screensaver authentication prompt, then select the existing user
session and perform an authentication.  This way PAM/Poldi work properly
and you are prompted for your smartcard's PIN#.  Authentication works
fine and you're back in your original session.
