That is because in the smtp protocol, a period on a line by itself
(<cr>.<cr>) signifies the end of a mail message, so _every_ e-mail
client _must_ take care to avoid this. Now, since it's more customary to
end a sentence with the period directly after the last word in most
languages (all that I know, but maybe...) this shouldn't be a problem in
most cases.

(so if you want a period on a line by itself, append a space, nobody
will see, but it won't be the end of your message either).
