are you trying to specify a subkey that isn't for encryption use? if 
you're trying to encrypt with a subkey that's a signing-only subkey it 
won't work for encryption.

but what's that about the _secret_ RSA key being used to cipher? gpg will 
ENcrypt to a public key and DEcrypt with a corresponding secret key.
