Would you prefer that you had simply been unsubscribed when your
email bounced?

This is exactly one of the features that Mailman's interface
provides.

The "no receipt" option is also good if you're going on vacation and
don't want to come back to a lot of mail that you could just as (or
probably more) easily read in the archives later, and also if you
want to post from more than one email address (say, a home address
and a work address) to a mailing list that restricts posting access to
subscribed email addresses (to avoid spam making it into the list),
but don't want to receive two copies of the email.

It's not a bad idea, but what you ran into is typical of Mailman
behavior, and it's the same for many other mailing lists.
