gnupg encryption (Eva Herskovicova)

GnuPG is a command-line tool.  This means that
it does not have built-in ability to place buttons on
the Microsoft Outlook toolbar that will allow the
convenience of encryption/decryption that PGP
affords.  Instead, GnuPG is used to encrypt or
decrypt files outside of Outlook, and the contents
of the files are moved into and out of Outlook using
copy/paste capabilities.

Also, the GnuPG port for Windows will not properly
communicate with keyservers under Windows NT --
although it is rumored to work with Windows 98/ME.

There are some add-on tools for using GnuPG with
windows such as GPGShell and WinPT.  These
tools sometimes have difficulties as they are not
quite debugged yet.  They will work on one computer
then have some problem with another computer.
They are both worth trying to see if you can get them
to work on your computer.  Generally the ability that
they will add is the capacity to work with drag/drop
and button pressing rather than requiring that the
commands for all operations be entered at the
command line.  They interface with the clipboard
when they are working right, allowing you to quickly
copy to the clipboard, decrypt, then paste back from
the clipboard.  Not quite the same level of integration
with Outlook that PGP 6 has, but effective.

There are some small differences in the capabilities
of PGP 6 and GnuPG with regard to encryption that
must (and can) be overcome in order to allow PGP
users and gpg users to interract.  First, PGP has
used the "IDEA" symmetric encryption algorithm
(which is patented) as its first choice for encryption
for many years.  Although "IDEA" can be added to
gpg easily, it is not included in the official release.
Your PGP6 keys will work with GnuPG, but they will
tell your contacts to use the "IDEA" algorithm when
encrypting messages to you.  Either add "IDEA" to
gpg or change your keys so that they specify "AES"
or some other algorithm in order to get PGP 6 to
send encrypted messages that you can decrypt.

Next, the GnuPG 1.0.7 release has some "options"
that I recommend using in order to enable effective
key exchange.  In order to keep this message
short, I'll save the options information for a later
message.

thanks to everybody for your advice.
one more question: is gnupg compatible with pgp? It means, can our
correspondent keep using PGP software and we move to gnupg. The usage is
only for e-mail encryption between two parties.

I'm using PGP FreeWare version 6.5.1, installed under Microsoft Outlook for
encryption/decryption of e-mails. We are at about to replace this product
with another one. Is it also possible to install your GnuPG product under
Microsoft outlook with the encryptio/decryption fonctionnality for user?
