I presume you mean:
dest-machine $ gpg --allow-secret-key-import \
--import secretkey.asc publickey.asc
> dest-machine $ gpg --import publickey.asc
Here's what I get:
gpg: Warning: using insecure memory!
gpg: key ZZZZZZZZZ: no valid user IDs
gpg: this may be caused by a missing self-signature
gpg: Total number processed: 1
gpg: w/o user IDs: 1
It's the same error as before.

One can't run edit-key until the public key is imported, I get this
error message:
gpg (GnuPG) 1.0.6; Copyright (C) 2001 Free Software Foundation, Inc.

under certain conditions. See the file COPYING for details.
gpg: Warning: using insecure memory!
gpg: key ZZZZZZZZ: secret key without public key - skipped
gpg: X: user not found
