technical question about the public key

Hello Gnupg-users,

   I have just downloaded, successfully compiled and test gpg
(ver=1.0.6).

   I have noticed that it does not generate RSA keys, but
ElGamal-algorithm
public keys.

   My question is: is the information about which algorithm to use
stored with the
public key?  I suspect the answer is yes.  I am a newbie to this amazing
product
and am studying the formats of the files used, but am not clear enough
on the
details yet to say for certain.

   My system is solaris-8 on a PC(intel86-compatible).
