Issues compiling git version

Just to check I installed automake 1.11 and was able to compile using:
AUTOMAKE_SUFFIX="-1.11" ./autogen.sh --force
but it fails when reverting to ./autogen.sh --force
and add AUTOMAKE_OPTIONS = serial-tests
to configure.ac
Is this the right way to specify the option?
